UPDATE: The HISA Program No Longer Covers Walk-in Bathtubs for Veterans

Bliss Tubs recently learned that, according to VHA Directive 1173.14 (PDF), the Home Improvements and Structural Alterations (HISA) Program has discontinued coverage of walk-in bathtubs for qualified veterans. The document, published December 26, 2017, lists “walk-in, sit down, hydrotherapy, jetted, spa, Jacuzzi style tubs” under section 7b as “examples of modifications that do not meet the scope of HISA.”

The directive rescinds VHA Handbook 1173.14, Home Improvements and Structural Alterations (HISA) Programs, dated April 18, 2008 which covered home improvements including walk-in bathtubs for veterans who met the specific qualifications of the program.

According to the directive, some structural alterations and improvements remain covered, including barrier-free showers.

We are very concerned about the impact that this directive will have on veterans in need across the country. We will be closely monitoring VA public relations bulletins and directives and will revise this section as soon as this unfortunate change in policy is rescinded.
